CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH:
3 INFLUENTIAL AFRICAN AMERICAN ARCHITECTS OF LOS ANGELES
Celebrating Black History Month with Los Angeles’ most influential African-American architects. African-American architects & designers have been involved in some of the most significant aesthetic decisions that have defined the look of this city.
Paul R. Williams: Beverly Hills Hotel & The Theme Building
“The Grandfather of Los Angeles Architecture”
Starting his career in 1914, Paul R. Williams had the determination to pursue his architectural dreams☁️ against all odds. The trailblazing architect made a name for himself designing homes for such clients as Frank Sinatra. Williams was the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects & later became the organization's first black fellow in 1957. Williams made many additions to the Beverly Hills Hotel, updating the lobby, adding on the Crescent Wing of the hotel and its Palm Terrace. If you have flown in or out of LAX airport, you’ve probably seen Williams’ futuristic looking Theme Building.
Norma M. Sklarek: The Pacific Design Center
Overcoming barriers of race and gender, Norma Sklarek was the first black woman to become a licensed architect in the United States. Sklarek was responsible for the construction of the Pacific Design Center's blue building, nicknamed the Blue Whale. which I got to work in when I interned for Who What Wear.
Gabrielle Bullock: Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
She was the first African-American and first woman to assume the role of managing director at Perkins + Will. Since 2013, has served as the firm’s Director of Global Diversity, which enables her to combine her passion for architecture & social justice to effect positive change. Perkins + Will served as the executive architect for the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, which I have been going to for over 10 years.
As an LA native, it’s interesting to learn about the amazing architects who have design & constructed buildings I have been walking through for years, whether it’s been for work, for a doctor’s appointment, for brunch or to catch a flight. It is awe-inspiring to think about the impact these architects have had on the lives of many Angelenos.
